We need TWO Mother’s Days a year! Who’s with me?

May 14, 2012 in Hardy-har-har, Kidlens, Life Lessons, Motherhood, The Kinfolk

Well Crap.

Mother’s Day is o-v-e-r.

Mother’s Day, for me, is like Christmas without the prep work. I look forward to it just as soon as it ends. It’s the only day of the entire year when I can dump all kidly duties over to the dad and not feel a tingle of guilt.

Don’t want to change a diaper? Ok. Hey, Dude, here’s your precious angel…diapers are in the drawer – don’t forget the cream.

Don’t want to deal with a three-year old’s meltdown? Ok. He’s all yours Daddy-O! I’m outta here – don’t call me.

Now it’s over and I have to wait another 364 days for my favorite day to return.

Damn.

Back to the normal shmormal. But at least the man is home from his two-week hiatus – AND coughing in the house is FINALLY starting to slow down. That took FOREVER – did I tell you Addy had an ear infection?

Oh, here’s where I gotta give props to my sister. Listen to this…so my sister, my twin (fraternal), best friend and mother of three (ages 11, 13 and 18)…when Adalei started to look crappy about a week into Arden’s sickness I sent my sister a picture of her (she lives 1000 miles away). This is when Neil was out-of-town and I just wanted someone else to look at her – she looked SO awful. Although I didn’t really expect much from sending the picture, my sister called me right away and said, “Uh, Carol? She looks swollen, like under her eyes, by her nose. You might want to call your doctor.”

Huh. Yeah. You’re right. That’s it. I knew she looked awful but I just couldn’t place it. I thought she just looked bad simply because she was sick.

So I called my pediatrician’s office that night and thankfully my rock’n pediatrician was the one on call and sure enough, she was concerned about an ear infection. She advised me to bring her in the following day.

Bingo. Ear infection. Poor baby. But if my sister hadn’t pointed it out, I don’t know that I would have zeroed in on it.

So anyway, the house is starting to return to normal, but I sure needed yesterday. I think we need to forget about “the issues” and start petitioning our elected officials, and those not yet elected (whoever they are – I’m so out of touch) for another Mother’s Day. Don’t you think we deserve TWO?

I do.

Happy belated Mother’s Day.

Word.

Thank you, Life: My Favorite Things

Do you have things that, when you see them or use them, they just make you smile? Something that makes you feel rich even though it may not have actually cost much? Something that makes you feel like you’re lucky to have?

Not me.

Oh, I’m kidding…of course I do.

I want to share them with you. Starting now. In a little segment I’m going to call Thank you, Life: My Favorite Things. I’ve wanted to do this for a long time but I kept forgetting…I’m going to blame it on the baby (she’s too young to defend herself).

Let me present to you Favorite Thing Numero Uno:

My husband bought me this cup. He picked it up at a resale store somewhere on his way back from an out of town job and added it to the gift basket he made for me for my first Mother’s Day ever. He also purchased for me a beautiful journey pendant and necklace…but I love this more. I know it’s hokey, but I just love it.

We had gotten into a huge fight the night before Mother’s Day and I don’t follow the saying “Don’t go to bed angry”. I was still angry when I woke up and came into the kitchen, foggy-eyed, and saw the gift basket on the kitchen table. Part of me wanted to pull the cup out of the basket and whack it upside his head but I thought better of it. I sat and stared at the basket and tried to appreciate everything in it. It wasn’t until we got our disagreement out of the way that I could really get excited about the gift basket and it’s contents. It was perfect, that cup. And I still love it.
